Current Situation

Peru is situated on the West Coast of South America on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. One in three of the roughly 30 million inhabitants is living in the metropolis region of Lima. Still today many of the poorer families from rural areas both in the mountain regions and in the rain forest send their children to Lima to work, as they are hoping for better chances there. But usually these children end up exploited as cheap labor with no rights, they don't go to school and are caught up more and more in the vicious circle of poverty and hopelessness. Another source of danger for the children in Peru is the flourishing sex tourism industry. For instance, just in Iquitos alone they estimate that 1000 minors are roped up in prostitution there. Of course children living on the streets are especially exposed and unprotected.
